Greene County

Early the area covered by what is now called Greene County Tennessee was a much larger area. See history of Greene County. In "Early East Tennessee Taxpayers" Compiled by Pollyanna Creekmore. This was published by the East Tennessee Historical Society Publication Number 39 in 1967. She wrote that Greene County was established by an Act of the North Carolina general assembly on April 18, 1783.

The Washington District of North Carolina was established as a "County" by the General Assembly of North Carolina in 1777, and was organized as a county on February 23, 1778. Greene County was taken from Washington County in 1783. Tennessee became a state in 1796 and Washington and Greene Counties North Carolina became Washington and Greene Counties Tennessee.

Most of the Henderson families discussed here actually settled on land that remained in Greene County, while a few of these Hendersons lived on land that became Cocke County, Sevier, Jefferson and Hawkins when this counties were created from parts of Greene County.

James Henderson and William Henderson were living in Greene County in 1783 or before, and are the only two Hendersons listed in Miss Creekmore publication mentioned above. In 1805 a copy of a list of free taxable inhabitants of Greene County was published by Pollyanna Creekmore in the same publication as mentioned above. On that list we find: Samuel Henderson, John Henderson, Joseph Henderson, Robert Henderson, and Daniel Henderson living in Greene County, Tennessee. James Henderson Sr. was killed by Indians in 1793 and William Henderson was apparently not in Greene County in 1805.

Another source of information is the Daughters of American Revolution Magazine April 1919. That publication indicated the Hendersons in Greene County area, in early times, were Daniel, John, Joseph, Thomas and William.

As the reader will see, there were many different Hendersons mentioned in Greene County records than were mentioned in these early census records. Perhaps the biggest unanswered question remains is: who were the parents of these different Hendersons and how were they related?

The early Greene County Hendersons are a very important link with the future Henderson families, not only found in Greene County but in many surrounding counties and other frontier States. Presented in the following paragraphs the reader will find records of Hendersons found in Greene County. These are not complete and the reader will need to seek more detailed information to establish relationships.
