FORWARD

After years of trying to identify the parents of John Henderson, who married Rachel Parman of Greene county, Tennessee, it seems unlikely that I woll find my connection. Therefore, I am recording the following information so that is, too, will not be lost to future generations. The contents are submitted with apologies for any and all errors. Additoins and corrections will be greatfully recieved.

INTRODUCTION

Hendersons migrated from Tennessee to misouri lured by the promise of land that had been pre-empted by Indians. They had heard stories about the rich farm land that was there.

Misouri was a border state and Platte county ws a border county with Kansas. In Platte county, Missouri there was a war within a war. Southern families were terribly mistreated there even before the Civil War.

Union troops were sent in to forage off of the land of the Southern families. They were robbed of their possessions, livestock crops, and fine horses by the Union Troops.

Some of the farm boys fought back in a guerilla group called "The Gray Gost of the Confederacy". But others realized the futility of the situation ans simply sold out and moved away. Some Hendersons and Thornburghs moved across the Missouri River into Kansas, but others went further west into Oregon and California seeking their fortunes.

FIRST GENERATION

John HENDERSON, native of Virginia, (parents unknown) was born between 1770 and 1780. His wife, Rachel Parman came from Pennsylvania, a daughter of Giles Parman, Sr. (Rev. War Vet) (2) John and Rachel were married in Greene County, Tennessee, 4 December 1800, (3) They lived on the south side of the Nolachucky River, their land being on the county line ... partly in Cocke County, Tennessee and partly in Greene County, TN.(4)

Subject was a member of the Flag Branch Baptist Church. He and Rachel are mentioned in the original minutes. (5) John Henderson, Giles Parman, Sr. and Emanuel Parman, (Rachel's brother gave 1/2 acre of land for the use of the Flag Branch Church. (6) They are last mentioned in the church minutes in 1839.

In April, 1839 John Henderson sold 25 acres of land to Philip Neas on the waters of the Caney Branch. (8) In August 1839 he sold to Henry Ottinger 170 acres of land on Caney branch, land being partly in Coch county and partly in Greene county, Tennessee.(9) In September 1839, he sold to Robert Evans 100 acres on the south side of the Nolachucky River in Caney Branch.

After selling their land, they moved from Greene County, Tennessee to Platte County, MO. The Platte Purchase was a triangular tract of land which was bordered on the west by the Missouri River. This land now encompasses the counties of Atchison, Nodaway, Holt, Andrew, Buchanan, Clinton and Platte. The 1839 tax ("early settler list") has John and his sons, John Jr., Perman, Joseph, and Giles listed. Rachel died there soon after they moved (between 1839-1841). John married a second time to Sarah,, last name unknown. Sarah is mentioned in his will, dated 5 November 1845 in Platte County, MO. He died in 1846.(13) Further proof of Sarah is found in estate settlements and deeds. John's widow, Sarah, married James Goodwin 13th February 1848 in Platte County. John's will was proved 9th of May 1846. His widow, Sarah, stated his last illness was in April 1846.(13) The search for their graves has been without success. It is said that since they probably had a family plot on their land the field might have been plowed under. A neighbor to the Henderson land said graves could have been washed away by a flood. No one seems to know.

Perman D. Henderson was born in Greene County, Tennessee, the 19th of September 1801. He was the firstborn of Rachel and John Henderson. He left hame when he was 18 years old and settled in Lafayette, Missouri.(I) It was in Lillard County, MO he married Sarah Trapp on the 25th of December, 1821. The family started to Oregon from St. Joseph in 1852 but turned back because of a cholera epidemic. They started again the 15th of April 1853. Perman was Captain of sixty three wagons. They lost John Dodson Henderson on the way and buried him near Vale, Oregon (4). Perman was in Oregon by September 15, 1853. He recorded there his Tennessee birth and marriage to Sarah Trapp in Missouri. They first settled near Wren, Oregon (west of Corvallis) and later took up a donation claim #3691 Benton County (320 acres) one mile from Wren and 12 miles from Corvallis. In 1860 Perman is listed in Benton County, Oregon. The sons & grandsons of Perman are still farming the original land grant. SECOND GENERATION

Joseph Henderson, born the 22nd of May, 1803 in Cocke County, Tennessee was the second son of Rachel and John Henderson. (1) He was reared and educated in Greene County, Tennessee. He married Hannah McCoy, daughter of John on the 14th of December, 1827. Hannah was born 15 March, 1811 and died 13 August 1892 in Kansas. In 1839 he moved to Jackson County, Missouri with his wife, his son James, his daughter, Mary Ann and his father John".(2) This information came from a Genealogical and Biographical record published in North-Eastern Kansas, written by George M. Henderson. In it he wrote that Rachel died in Tennessee. It has since been proved that her husband had a coffin built for her in Missouri in 1839. Her father, Giles Parman, was of English origin. When Indian land was opened to settlers north of Jackson County, Joseph moved to Platte County, Missouri. In 1850 Joseph and his son, James, drove an ox team to California gold fields and not striking it rich, sold out in 1851. He and James took a ship to Panama and walked across the Isthmus. There they took a river boat home to Platte County, Missouri. Joseph moved from Platte County across the Missouri River into Leavenworth County, Kansas in 1855 and on into Atchison County, Kansas in 1868 ... settled along Stranger Creek. He died in October, 1888, aged 85, and is buried in Pleasant Grove.(4)

No marriage record has been found in Greene County, TN. They were probably married about 1825 ... 1 year before their first child was born. If they married in Cocke County we will never know because a fire destroyed early court records in Cocke CO.) They lived on the county line of Cocke & Greene Co. TN.

SECOND GENERATION

John Henderson, JR, fourth son of John and Rachel (Parman) Henderson was born in Tennessee in 1806.(1) He married his first cousin, Sarah Parman, 22 July, 1828.(2) She was the daughter of Emanuel Parman brother of John's mother, Rachel Parman Henderson. According to census records, their first 4 children were born in Tennessee. The family must have moved to Missouri because the next three children were born there. They were in Missouri in 1839. Their eighth child, Newton, was born in Texas in 1848 according to the Grayson County, Texas census in 1850.(3)

The next court record we have referring to John and Sarah appears in Greene County, TN - Tennessee Deeds, the 6th of October 1857. It is a settlement between the heirs of Emanuel Parman, deceased. (4)

Sarah and John had, at least, eight children. Grayson County, TX after 1857.

SECOND GENERATION

Nancy Ann (Anna) Henderson is mentioned in her father's will.(1) The 1830 census lists her as being born between 1815 & 1820.(2) There was one daughter left at home in 1840,(3) and that was likely Elizabeth. Anna married Kinsey Lanum the 2nd of October 1834 in Jackson Co., MO. The 1840 census (Jackson CO) lists Anna and her husband, Kinsey Lanum, a manufacturer. However, an 1855 census lists her as being born in 1825. There is a discrepancy on her age but there is no doubt of her parentage. In the Kansas Territory census 1855 it lists Nancy A. and Kinsey (a farmer - shoemaker) with their children as follows:(4)

Children:	(Estate settlement of Kinsey Lanum)

John Edward Lanum	born 1837 Missouri

Kinsey Lanum died 17 May 1857 and Nancy married again in 1858.(5) She married Andrew White before 10th of Aug, 1859. Her obituary lists her as Nancy Ann White. We found no marriage record for a marriage to McGrath/McGruff. Papers were issued for her estate December 1870.
