Haywood County

William Hendrick Henderson

From: Priscilla Reinowski

It was William Hendrick Henderson and not William Henry Henderson who was one of the founders of Haywood County. I have seen this error, possibly a misinterpretation of "William H.", recorded in a book in the Brownsville Public Library and credited to a Mrs. Nunn, a local historian.

William H. Henderson was in Haywood County by 1823 and perhaps earlier He married his second wife, Sarah Murphy Howard, there 6 November 1823. There is evidence that he surveyed and platted for John McLemore, a large landholder, in western Tennessee lands and the town of Brownsville, the county seat of Haywood County. He was elected the first register of deeds in Haywood County and recorded the first deed ever registered in that county. The court appointed him one of the five commissioners to superintend the laying out of the town of Brownsville and the selling and conveyance of lots. His third son, Thomas Jefferson Henderson, is said to be the first white child born in Brownsville.

Many descendants have copies of a manuscript entitled "A Record of my family relations made on my 59th birthday being November 16, 1852. William H. Henderson." He wrote, "My paternal grandfather was named William Henderson, was born, lived and died on Taylor"s Creek, Hanover County, Virginia. His wife's name was Elizabeth." Later he wrote, "John Henderson (my father) was born in Hanover County, Virginia, December 23rd, 1763, married 29th of July 1788, to Nancy Singleton, daughter of Christopher Singleton, in Lincoln County, Kentucky, and settled on Dix River opposite the mouth of Clark's Run in Garrard County, Kentucky."

He then relates much family history with that concerning his aunts, uncles and cousins being the object of much controversy among Henderson researchers.

It is documented that he was a member of Col. Richard Johnson's 2nd Kentucky Riflemen during the War of 1812. Moving to Tennessee, he was the first sheriff in Stewart County, where he married Lucinda Wimberly, 11 January 1816. (I have proved this Wimberly line back through England and the Magna Charter.) Three children were born to them. Mary Ann, the eldest, was born January 3, 1817. John Wimberly Henderson (my great grandfather), was born 26 July 1819, and William Perry Henderson was born November 22, 1821. His wife, Lucinda, died May 23, 1823.

He then married Sarah Murphy Howard in Haywood County, Tennessee, 6 November 1823. They had six children, five sons and a daughter, Elizabeth, their second child, who died at the age of six. The sons were named Thomas Jefferson, Stephen Howard, Henry Clay, Daniel Webster and James Allen. (A photograph of all seven of WHH's sons as adults hangs on a wall above my computer.)

I have been told that my great great grandfather bore the Christian name of his grandfather, William, and himself added the Hendrick to distinguish himself from the many other William Hendersons. It was he who was elected to the Senate of the State of Tennessee in 1835. On his return from the state capitol in the spring of 1836, he resigned his seat in the Senate in order to carry out a long cherished plan of removal to Illinois. He not only served in the Tennessee legislature, but also with Abraham Lincoln in the Illinois legislature when the family moved to that state.

There is much information available of this West Tennessee family, truly a fascinating story of a close knit family. Much was written of and by them. I am descended from John Wimberly Henderson and have my Henderson collection. It includes a family Bible, numerous photographs (one of WHH), the full page article from the Des Moines (Iowa) Register, a booklet of an autobiographical article of John Wimberly Henderson first published in The Cedar Rapids (Iowa) Gazette, numerous obituaries, articles from county histories, land records, snapshots taken of Henderson tombstones at Riverside Cemetery, Marshalltown, Iowa. (Includes that of WHH and wife, Sarah.)

An original leather bound edition of the book, STARK COUNTY AND ITS PIONEERS, contains nine pages devoted to William H. Henderson and twelve pages to Thomas Jefferson Henderson.

Many Henderson cousins have exchange information through the years. The first researcher's booklet of information I acquired was that compiled by Ralph Dalton Henderson, a descendant of WHH through son Stephen Howard Henderson, It reflects a tremendous amount of work, though I do have questions as to some of it.

Contact with James H. Andrew, a retired lawyer of Jefferson, Iowa , and descendant through WHH's son, Daniel Webster Henderson, graciously gave me a copy of a booklet of research material and pictures he had compiled for his family. Jim also put me in touch and we attended a reunion of descendants of WHH's brother, Singleton James Henderson, in Jackson. Mississippi.

The introduction to Jim Andrew's book gives much information as to the source of what is available today. I quote: "About twenty years ago, I met a distant cousin, Aimee Henderson, in a grocery store in Jefferson, and although an estrangement had existed for many years between our two families, I engaged her in conversation concerning the Hendersons. The result was that I drove Aimee and her groceries to her apartment, carried the groceries upstairs to her quarters where she invited me in and showed me some of the old documents and letters she had. Aimee was the last of her line and these papers were the result of the interest of her father, Judge James A. Henderson, in the Henderson genealogy. Starting about 1900, he had made various inquiries and had received considerable information from his uncle, Thomas Jefferson Henderson, who also had a great interest in this matter. Judge Henderson's efforts continued off and on until 1928.

"I thought about this for several days, and having a secretary who had some time available, I borrowed the collection of papers from Aimee, sorted them into some state of chronological order, removed unrelated material, and had my secretary type them, making several carbon copies. This was before the introduction of copy machines which make reproduction so easy. In the end there were over 100 single-spaced pages of typing pertaining to various Hendersons and their activities.

"The following persons deserve credit for making this history possible:

William H. Henderson, who made a record of his relatives in 1852;
Thomas Jefferson Henderson, who wrote many accounts
        of the Hendersons in Tennessee and Illinois;
John Wimberly Henderson, who in 1902 wrote a
       detailed recollection of the experiences in his life, which
       was later published in a newspaper and in a pamphlet for
       family members;
James A Henderson, who in 1928 collected and organized
       various articles on the Hendersons;
       Aimee Henderson, who saved this collection of papers,
       and despite many changes of residence, held on to
       them until I had them copied in 1960."

Some of Aimee's original papers are now in the possession of Priscilla Rogers Reinowski.

Elsie M. Pollack, of Billings, Montana, collected and assembled her data as a descendant of John Hope Henderson, another brother of WHH. Few records survived the fires in Hanover County, Virginia during the Civil War, but Elsie has made the most of them in studying and reaching her conclusions as to Hendersons in early generations in that area. She sent me a copy, and I see from your correspondence that you are in contact with her.

I will be happy to exchange my Henderson data with anyone interested and can add to your bibliography. We are truly indebted to people like you who keep the genealogy ball rolling.

These records were copied by someone who did not understand old handwriting because of that the recopying process, there may be mistakes. However, to date the only errors found are related to information for the "other children who died in infancy" as stated in Wm. H. Henderson's Journal. in the Bible records of John H. Henderson it is difficult to tell whether the death date for John Henderson is 1833 or 1835. In his Journal, John H. Henderson, in the fall of 1834, states "my parents are now no more".
