In May of 1986 I received a letter from a lady, Edith E. Kaufman of Albhanbia, IL, there is no return on the letter. She was studying the Edgar family, a George Edgar came from Shenandoah County VA to Jefferson County TN about 1790. George was Mrs. Kaufman's GG Granddaughter. Or 3rd Great Grandfather. George according to her letter was buried in Pine Chapel Methodist Cemetery on the French Broad River between Dandridge and Newport TN. He married twice, four children by first wife John, George Jr., Jacob, and Catherine. George Sr. died 1826. She did not mention Andrew Edgar in her letter. George Edgar married Burtha Henderson in 1804. The name Buthena was used in the Sevier County line of Hendersons.

In The Virginia Genealogist, Vol. 5, No. 3, July- September 1961 pp. 98-106; the article about Ann (Herndon) Lea and on page 104 it is discussed why Joseph Henderson and his wife, Philadelphia Lea named their son Major Henderson. It came about because Rev Luke Lea her brother named a son Major Lea. Major Lea was in Jefferson County, TN.

JEFFERSON COUNTY TN

S. J. Henderson was an attorney in Nashville, TN on 23 May 1891 when he wrote a letter on that date. Below are parts of that letter shared by Pete Brown of Dalton GA and published in Volume VI, #4 pages 191-192. This was entitled "The Steele - Hammond and Henderson - Rogers Families of Upper East Tennessee."

The letter was addressed to Rev. B.H. Green. The information was being sent to prepare the obituary of his mother. "About the year 1734 my mother's great grandparents came from England and Ireland and settled in Abingdon VA. One of their grandchildren Rachel Hammond married James Steele at Abingdon VA. These were my mother's parents. They moved from Abingdon to Greeneville in East Tennessee. They had three children, two sons, James Steele and William Steele and one daughter, my mother, Sally Hammond Steele. She was born at Greeneville, TN, on the 16th of March 1811 and died at her home in Dalton, GA on Friday April 3, 1891.

She was a child only two years old when her mother, Rachel Hammond Steele died. Her father and her brother James Steele both were killed in the War of 1812. My mother and her brother William Steele were the only surviving members of the family. They were awarded military land grants in Alabama in 1840 because of the service of their father and brother.

The Hendersons also came from VA and were among the early settlers of East TN. My great grandfather Andrew Henderson and four of his brothers settled in Jefferson County and Monroe Counties and owned large tracts of land on the French Broad River."

These brothers were: Thomas born ca 1776, Robert born ca 1764, John born ca 1760, Andrew born ca 1758 and Samuel born ca 1765.

My grandfather on the Henderson side was John R. Henderson (ca.1784-1856), who was a son of Andrew Henderson. John R. Henderson married Elizabeth Rogers, (a daughter of Thomas and Jane Rogers) and lived for many years on the French Broad River about two miles from the old town of Dandridge TN. They raised a large family of five sons and six daughters.

Among these were: Thomas Rogers Henderson born Nov 11 1809, my father, Sallie Henderson, wife of Shadrack Inman, Margaret M. Henderson, George B. Henderson, John K. Henderson and James C. Henderson born 1829. Elizabeth R. Henderson was another daughter and she was born 23 of February 1823 in Jefferson County TN and married E. R. Sasseseen. She died on 8 Sep 1866 in Atlanta GA. Others are unknown.

"My mother and father were married at Dandridge TN in the house of Uncle Shadrack Inman which had been the home of my mother from early childhood, April 12, 1837. My father died 16 May 1877. They had 10 children, three of whom died in infancy and two later on in life; sister Nannie died April 1865 and brother William September 3, 1890. Five of us, two sisters and three brothers, still survive".

Of these five they were: S.J. Henderson,

"About 1843 S. J. Henderson's family left Jefferson County and started down the Tennessee River bound for Missouri. However, his father had recently purchased land in Bradley County and this persuaded his father and family to get off the boat and settle in Bradley County TN. And they lived there until 1855 when they moved to Dalton GA.

Jefferson County TN, several of the Henderson the early days was thought to have descendants of John Andrew Henderson and his wife Mary Russell. John Andrew Henderson died in Washington County VA in 1780. His father may have been Samuel Henderson (1713-1782) His wife Mary (Russell), moved the family to Jefferson County TN. There were five sons and four daughters. The six sons were: Robert, Andrew, John, Thomas, and Samuel. One daughter was Florence who married Alexander Shadden. Another daughter Sallie married Shadrack Inman.

John Henderson was in the battle of Kings Mountain in 1780. He married Margaret Hammod, they had a son John Henderson Jr. who married Dorcas McSpadden about the year 1815 in Jefferson County and later moved to Monroe County TN. John Henderson Sr. and wife Margaret Hammod are buried somewhere near Tellico Plains in Monroe County TN.

John Henderson Jr. and his wife Dorcas McSpadden are buried at Sink and their graves are marked (Reba Mitchell data). Benjamin Peck Henderson was a son of John and Dorcas Henderson and he was born 1821 in Dandridge and grew up in Belltown where his parents moved to when he was a small child. He married Margaret A. Hammontree and they had eight children (Tennessee and Tennesseans page 1773) One son was John Thompson Henderson who married S.C. Williams and they had one child, Maud L. Henderson who married James Victor Henderson.

Another son of John and Dorcas Henderson was Thomas Alexander Henderson born 27 Oct 1826. (Tennessee, The Volunteer State pp. 535 and 536). Other children of John Henderson Jr. and Dorcas (McSpadden) were: Samuel, Eliza, Mary, Jane, Nancy, Robert and Dorcas (Bradford data, Chattanooga, TN).

Thomas Alexander Henderson (1826-1911) married Martha Caldwell (1828-1918) and they had five children: William Bryant, James Harvey, Mary Ellen, Oliver Benjamin, and Martha Caldwell.

There are different conflicts in data, typically of Henderson family study. In a reference: Dictionary of Scottish Emigrants to the USA, by Donald Whyte, Magna Carta Book Company, Baltimore MD, gives the genealogy of a John Henderson (1720- 24 Mar 1787). According to this he was the son of Alexander Henderson of Augusta County VA and before 1760 he married Anne Givens daughter of John Givens and Mary Sitlington. They were the parents of five sons: William born ca 1766, John born ca. 1760, James, Samuel, and George born ca 1759.

Another family with roots in Jefferson County is the family of W. G. Jerry Henderson. Jerry was born in Knoxville TN in on Sep 14 1939; his father was Paul James Henderson born in Knoxville TN on May 25 1909; his father was Birch Park Henderson born Apr 8 1879 in McMinn County TN; and his father was James K. Polk Henderson born Oct 24 1844; his father was Thomas Jefferson Henderson born in 1812 in Jefferson County TN.

There is little doubt that up to this point, the facts are correct. Jerry's family seems to think Thomas Jefferson Henderson born in 1812 was related to Samuel Henderson (1713-1782) through John Andrew Henderson (1730-1782) his son John Henderson(1760- ?) married about 1786 to Margaret Hammond.

Within the family papers of Jerry Henderson's family it is indicated that Thomas Jefferson Henderson born 1812 was a son of William C. Henderson. And another son of William C. Henderson was Mastin or Mass Henderson. A Maston Henderson married 15 June 1824 in Jefferson County TN to Elizabeth Calthrope. Apparently Thomas Jefferson Henderson married her sister Susanna Calthrope. There is no known marriage record for the last mentioned couple.

Jerry's family papers show that William C. Henderson left Jefferson County TN in 1831 and settled in McMinn County TN. There was a Thomas J. Henderson on the 1850 McMinn County census record with a wife Susanna. They were also on the 1860 McMinn County TN census record.

The county next to McMinn County is Bradley County. There in 1840 was a William C. Henderson with 2-0-0-0-0-1 and 1-0-0-0-1 in the family.

Jerry's data shows Mastin Henderson went to Monroe County before 1830 and was Sheriff there. He was the father of a daughter who married a Stokley. In Monroe County in 1830 there was a Maston Henderson there with 4 in his family 1-0-0-0-1 1-0-0-0-1.

In a 1836 tax list Monroe County TN District #7 Mastin Henderson.

In 1840 Monroe County TN Census Mastin Henderson 0-0-1-1-0-1 0-0-1-0-0-1

male 15-20 (1820-1825)
male 30-40 (1800-1810)
female 10-15 (1825-1830)
female 30-40 (1800-1810)

There was a Mastin Henderson with family of four in the 1830 Grainger County census record. It is assumed that Mastin Henderson born in Jefferson County TN moved to Van Zandt County TX after 1850, his name first appeared in the 1860 census there, however, in Sep 1856 there is a record where he was granted a license to sell liquor. His son John R. C. Henderson born in TN in 1825 was Sheriff in Van Zandt County TX. It is not known when Mastin Henderson died however it may have been between 1870-1890. Some data from James Byars Carter, M.D., 2802 Northwood Rd, Austin, TX 78703 in "Family of Mastin Henderson of Can Zandt County TX" Vol. 5 July 1988, No. 3 Henderson Heritage- A Family Study. Mary K. Hubbard Ed.

Mastin Henderson married Elizabeth Calthrope in Jefferson County TN on 15th June 1824. The birth date of Mastin Henderson is thought to be about 1804. Elizabeth was a daughter of John Calthrope. Another daughter of his married Thomas Henderson. Mastin Henderson lived in Roane County and in Monroe County TN. There is a good accounting of a Mastin Henderson in Vol. 5 No. 3 Jul 1988 Henderson Heritage - A family study. Ed. Mart K. Hubbard of Leesburg, VA on pages 1-10. Mastin moved from TN to Van Zandt County TX by 1860.

Very little is known about William Henderson the son of Samuel Henderson (1713-1782). Some family members think William C. Henderson was related to Samuel (1713-1782). A son, William was alive in 1782 as he was mentioned in Samuel's Will of 1782. A son William was also mentioned in 1798 by Samuel's wife in her Will. Data gathered by K. Bushman on page 23 says William married a Mary Beard daughter of Edward Beard on 22 May 1797 and they moved to Lincoln County KY. In another deed found in Augusta County VA deed book 29 page 107 14 Jan 1797 it reads in part "William Henderson and Mary of Lincoln County KY to Moses McCue 100 acres part of 268 acres patented to Barbara Smith 1 March 1773."

In the study of another Henderson family in Jefferson County TN it is possible that William C. Henderson was related to the William Henderson and Mary (George) family. There is some evidence that suggests that this William Henderson had been married prior to his marriage with Mary George in 1792. This William Henderson died in 1814 in Jefferson County. There is documented proof that a John C Henderson and a William C. Henderson were related to William Henderson who died in 1814 in Jefferson County TN.

This William ( ?-1814) did have a son Thomas born about 1811-12 in Jefferson County, TN proof is in Williams Will when he wrote that his Will could not be settled until his youngest son was 18 years old. The youngest son was a Thomas Henderson. Then in 1830 the Will was settled by Mary Henderson, Thomas Henderson's mother, when she went before the Court to fulfill William's wishes in that his son Thomas had reached the age of 18.

James Henderson II married Jane Dawson and they both died in 1835 in Lincoln County MO. The parents of James Henderson, II (ca.1799 - ca. 1836) is thought to have been the William and Mary (George) Henderson of Jefferson County TN. They were married in VA in 1792 and moved to Jefferson County TN ca.1803. Soon after his father died in 1814 James II went back to Pittsylvania County VA where his father William had lived. William's father was a James Henderson I (1737- ca.1795). This James Henderson I was married twice, his first wife is unknown and his second wife was widow Mary Buckley, they are thought to have moved from Loudon County VA to Pittsylvania County VA.

James Henderson II and Jane Dawson were the parents of John Brooks Henderson who later became a Senator from Missouri and served with the treaties making among the Plains Indians. He was born 16 Nov 1826 in Pittsylvania County VA. In 1833 he moved to Lincoln County MO with his parents. A brother James Nolton Henderson was born in Danville, Pittsylvania County VA on December 28, 1832. His parents died in 1836. (See "History of Pike County Missouri", published by Mills and Company Des Moines Iowa 1883 pages 742-743). John Brooks Henderson was admitted to the Bar as an attorney in 1848 in Pike County MO. There are many references to John B. Henderson some are listed here: Sketch of John B. Henderson by Savoyard published in the Nashville Banner, Apr 28 1905.

William M. Bradford (1827-1895) married Elizabeth K. Inman on 23 September 1846 in Dandridge TN she was the daughter of Shadrack and Sarah (Henderson) Inman. (See Bio Directory Tennessee General Assembly, Volume I, page 69). William M. Bradford was a son of Henry and Rachel (McFarland) Bradford. Henry Bradford (1776-1781) was a gunsmith in Jefferson County TN and he made the gun "Long Bess" belonging to David Crockett and Bradford was Justice of the peace who preformed the wedding of the marriage of David Crockett in Jefferson County TN.
