Newport Newspaper 1883 reported that Mollie Henderson ran off with G.M. Maples and got married. Ran away from a party at Henderson Spring, Sevier County, TN.
In Col. David Henley's Waste Book (rough accounts, etc.) when he was agent of the War Dept. in SW Territory from 1793-1801, a Capt. William Henderson listed in 1795 and also a Drummer James Henderson - a Private. Copy of the Muster Roll of 12th Company Sub legion of the U.S. Army that was sent to White's Block house which was located where the old Knox County Courthouse now stands.
On page 139 of the above mentioned book it mentions a Capt. William Henderson who served under Gen. John Sevier in the Etowah Battle in 1793. This might have been the William Henderson killed at Etowah Springs.

History of the Henderson family in Sevier County TN by W.R. Henderson of Knox County TN stated that early ancestors originated in Scotland and led up to the descendants of Abraham Henderson, who is the direct ancestor of the Henderson of this section.

There were two records of one Lt. Wm Henderson in Sevier's Etowah Indian battle in Ramsey's Annals of TN on page 590. Then there was mention of Capt. William Henderson in Soldiers of War of 1812 By McCowan. In another place I read where Pleasant Henderson brother of Col. Richard Henderson had a son William who was killed in Etowah battle.

Early Wills Elizabeth Henderson Will 1860 wb-1-61 William Henderson Will 1860 wb-1-56In a 1927 Sevierville TN newspaper there is a notice of a Henderson Reunion that was held shortly before the newspaper was published. In this notice it reads that the Henderson family of Sevier County TN began in America with an Abraham Henderson. The name Abraham has never been repeated in recorded generations to my knowledge. In more recent times I have been contacted by cousins belonging to the line of Hendersons who have their roots in Sevier County TN: and they also tell stories of three brothers from Ireland who came to America. One of these brothers was killed by Indians, in southern Lee County VA, in early times. It is said this brother had two families. One family came to Sevier County after this brother was killed by Indians. However, in this story may people claim Abraham came to Sevier County TN. Supposedly in this story one of the brothers was caught stealing horses and convicted and executed. In the story the other brother established the family in Sevier County, TN. This story conflicts with history in that in a book written in the 1880's when some of the third generation of Sevier County Hendersons were still alive. That history says a William Henderson Sr. who came from VA was killed by Indians west of the present day town of Kingston, TN.
Never the less, I searched the early records for any mention of an Abraham Henderson in TN. The name Abraham has been found in the Cannon line in Jefferson County when in the 1820's a child was named Abraham Henderson Cannon. Depending upon which census you want to believe this Abraham Henderson Cannon was either born in TN or NC. He named one of his sons Isaac Henderson Cannon. Barbara Koch sent me this information in 1998. She is related to Emanuel Cannon another son of Abraham Henderson Cannon. She was of the opinion that AHC mother was a Henderson. The Sevier County TN Hendersons were close to the Cannons in early TN records, often inter-marrying. There was a James Cannon who married a Rebecca Lackens, in Jefferson County TN where a John Henderson was the bondsman. Barbara's e-mail address was Internet: kockfam@gte.net I think this James Cannon was a minister and a son of Thomas Cannon of Jefferson County TN.
A line of Hendersons, from Madison County NC and said to have connections to Hendersons in Sevier County TN named a child Robert Abraham Henderson. In a letter dated 25 June 1988 from Mrs. Luther (Hester) Morgan of New Market TN, she stated: "my great grandfather's name was Robert Abraham Henderson born in 1865. His father was suppose to be Cherokee. Since some of the Henderson pictures were taken in Sevier County (TN) I was wondering if this would be the place to start looking for ancestors." This is a lead that needs to be followed further.
The only record of an Abraham Henderson which I have found in early TN records is a military land grant of 640 acres in Robertson County TN on 30 September 1785. This grant was for service in the Revolutionary war reserved by law for the officers and soldiers of the continental line of this state (NC). The grant number is 1639 and the warrant number is 2571: book 76 page 331. The location of this grant is: lying south side of the Cumberland River on the east side of Wells Creek. This grant was sold to John McNees by the heirs of Abraham Henderson who was dec'd at the time (1785). In 1785 McNees sold the land to Thomas Hays.
This transfer took place in 1785, in Fairfield NC which is in Union County NC (today). The heirs were represented by an Anthony Henderson and he signed with a mark. Union County NC was formed in 1842 from Mecklenberg and Anson Counties NC. It is likely that the Henderson heirs of Abraham were in one of those counties. Mecklenberg County NC was formed in 1762 from Anson, Anson formed 1750 from Bladen and Bladen formed 1734 from New Hanover County NC. There is a record of an Abraham Henderson being killed in the Revolutionary War from NC with a wife named Ann. (see Roster of Soldiers from North Carolina in the American Revolution). The only Anthony Henderson I've been able to located thru far is one mentioned in Chalkley, who lived in VA. John McNees was a Captain in the NC.
Then in 1792 the land was surveyed for a Thomas Hays by Armstrong and signed by Wm McLin D.S.. At that time 1792 Hays sold the land to John Nichols.
I've traced other Abraham Hendersons finding that the name is most often associated with Daniel Henderson. One of the earliest Abraham Henderson was in Augusta County VA when a John Henderson signed an indenture and sold Abraham Henderson 200 acres of land in 1774. (Film #30350 book 20,page 277). This land was located on Bever Creek and Bruney Branch being part of two tracts Granted to Daniel Henderson by Patent containing 675 acres and the other containing 310 acres in Augusta County VA.
Ruth Stiffy wrote her Will and it was probated in Grainger County TN in 1834. Her maiden name was Henderson, and her father was Daniel Henderson. In her Will she mentioned several brothers and sisters, including an Abraham. They were from Augusta County VA and by 1791 they were living in Greenbrier County (West VA). This Abraham Henderson married Ann Blanton by the mid 1790's. They later moved to Madison County KY. So this rules out this particular Abraham as being the one killed during the Revolutionary War.

There was an Abraham Henderson in early Montgomery County VA who married Rachel Whitt in 1780. Montgomery County was once part of or close to Lee County VA. However, I have been unable to trace this Abraham Henderson and cannot say that this was the Abraham Henderson who tradition says was related to the Sevier County, TN Hendersons.
