Williamson County

A John Henderson died in Williamson County TN in 1804 where he had 960 to 1066 acres of land on the Little Harpeth River. He left five heirs: John McAlpin, in the right of his wife; Robert Smith in the right of his wife; Margaret; William and Robert dec'd his heirs: daughter Elender, Daughter Mary and three sons John, Robert and Benjamin. Robert dec'd died in Washington County VA in 1802. His Will is in Book 2, page 326. Robert dec'd wife was Mary.

This family lived in Rich Valley, Washington County VA in the early 1780's. In the 1782 census of Washington County VA these Hendersons were recorded as being there:

Andrew
John
Mary
Richard
Robert (acquired 250 acres in Rich Valley May 2, 1782)
William (acquired 100 acres in Rich Valley August 17, 1781)

Excerpts from "Annals of Southwest Virginia" by Summers Published in 1929 gives court records for March 20, 1781 "on motion Mary Henderson, Andrew Henderson and Edward Stephenson administration is granted them on the estate of John Henderson deceased. May 15, 1781 the inventory of the estate was accepted and ordered recorded.

The Mary in the census was thought to have been the wife of the John Henderson who was dec'd in 1781. Andrew was probably a son. On January 14, 1794 Andrew and Agnes his wife living in Jefferson County TN sold land on the middle fork of the Holston River. Summer's book shows actual settlers in Washington County VA and gives Andrew August 18, 1785 160 acres on the south side Middle Fork of the Holston.

The John Henderson mentioned in the 1782 census was thought to be the John Henderson who died in Williamson County TN in 1804. And the recorded evidence supports this theory. Records from the courthouse in Franklin, TN 10 Apr 1811 on petition of Evan B. Ormes and David Holliday showing that a certain John Henderson died possessed of 640 acres being pre-emption -also a guard right etc. Divided into five parts after the death of said John Henderson and assigned to the following persons who were the heirs of the said John Henderson to wit: Robert Henderson dec'd. (His heirs five in number were: (see 1802 Will) Ellender m. Evans Barnes Ormes; Mary (1779-1845) m. David Holliday; John; Robert (1785-1874); Benjamin ---- - 1846-7 in Jackson County IL.) Then other children of John Henderson included John McAlpin in the right of his wife; Robert Smith in the right of his wife; Margaret Henderson; and William Henderson.

This information was gathered by Mary H. Henderson of Knoxville Tennessee who on June 28 1942 lived at 1000 Davenport Road. Her letter to "Mame" with attached documents was copied at the Tennessee State Library in Nashville, TN. A petition related to this information can be found in Tennessee State University Library, in Knoxville, as well as at the Tennessee Library in Nashville.
